5 tips to get your child to sleep on holiday
Holidays with your kid(s), the pinnacle of happiness. You can´t wait to show your baby the world and all of its beauty. You can´t start young enough right? Mmmm think again momma and dadda!
If you´re lucky enough your child gets so exhausted from al the new impressions and actually likes sleeping in his new environment, count yourself lucky, you have a very special child and spare a thought when going to bed to actually sleep for those who aren’t that lucky. Which is basically 99% of us parents.
For those 99% who aren’t that lucky, here are a few tips to help getting your baby to sleep on holiday. Spoiler alert: tip #5 works best!
- Relax!
It´s ok to not completely stick to your routine at home. If you are very stressed about putting your baby to sleep, he will feed of your bad vibes and before you know it he´ll be ready to go to Pacha with his new friends he met at the beach. Too bad you have to be 18 to get in.
- Hot bedroom
Let your baby sleep in the coolest room of the house or check if the villa or hotel has aircon. If the room doesn’t have aircon but only a fan, make sure to not point it straight at the cot but at the wall, all you want is for the air to circulate, not create a tornado inside the cot. If there´s A/C in the room, keep it at 24 degrees otherwise they´ll catch a cold which obviously beats the purpose.
- Bring something familiar from home
If your child is used to sleeping with a teddy or blanket or likes to read a certain book, bring that with you so can recreate a familiar bedtime routine. Or buy a small toy that will be his holiday bedtime friend.
- Don’t start co-sleeping
If you normally co-sleep then by all means continue during your holiday, if you start co-sleeping whilst on holiday to make your life easier because you want to fully enjoy those balmy evenings by the pool in your fancy villa with a good glass of wine and some adult conversations, think again! Instead of letting your baby sleep with you, let her fall asleep in her stroller and put her in her cot when she´s asleep. Pray she doesn’t wake up during the transition to her cot!
- Pray
On the topic of praying, pray to mother nature, god, an extraterrestrial force whatever you can think of that the above tips work and your baby actually wants you to enjoy your holiday after all the things you have done for her!
If all of the above fails and your little one is still not sleeping, crack open a bottle of wine or champers and enjoy the balmy Ibiza evening together with your baby. At some point they´ll fall asleep.
